continuation of the previous incarnation, perhaps

I just finished the master and margarita by bulgakov and it was really good. read fast like a young adult novel with footnotes. but with more substance maybe and less "young adulty" themes. but young adult fiction has actually got some quality shit so dont let that deter.. cuz its basically just a really good fucking book haha and i am completely dead wrong about what i just said who knows.

oh shit i guess next is lolita. i'll make sure i go to class more often so i can try to tell you why exactly it qualifies as a russian novel because atm i have no opinion either way

i've never really thought of it as depressing as hell but i dunno maybe it is. maybe it depends what you think of as depressing. i know gogol at least wrote some undepressing stuff. i didnt think crime and punishment was very depressing i mean it all depends how you think of it really if you go into it with the wrong attitute sure it might depress you but i've never had that problem :\

and thats awesome irene!! do you like it?

so for russian class just this past week or so we were supposed to do an independent reading in russian so i decided to take this opportunity to begin We. It was really slow going because i had to look up every fucking word lol but actually a really rewarding process. For part of the assignment we had to translate a page so i just did the first page here it is (fyi the INTEGRAL is a space ship, and numbers are what they call people because no one has names they are just given a number instead):

I am merely copying, word for word, that, which was published today in the State Gazette:

“120 days from now, the building of the INTEGRAL will be complete. Near at hand is the great, historic hour, when the first INTEGRAL will soar into space. One thousand years ago, your heroic ancestors subjugated the entire world to the power of One State. Before you lies a still more glorious feat: to integrate the endless equation of the universe by means of the glassy, electric, fire-breathing INTEGRAL. Before you lies the task of subjecting the unknown creatures, which live on other planets, perhaps still in the savage condition of freedom, to the beneficial yoke of reason. If they do not realize that we are bringing them a mathematically infallible happiness, it will be our duty to compel them to be happy. But before arms, we shall try words.

In the name of the Benefactor, the following is declared to all of the numbers of One State:

All who feel they have the power to do so are obliged to compose treatises, epic poems, manifestoes, odes or other compositions on the beauty and grandeur of One State.

This shall be the first load carried by the INTEGRAL.

Long live One State, long live the numbers, long live the Benefactor!”
